portgroups and input ports on compiled, self-installing operators

Are there any good examples of how to add portgroups to compiled,
self-installing custom operators and the subsequent addition of inputports
to those portgroups. I'm under the impression that I'm doing this correctly
but it's failing quite badly. Basically, the operator is refusing to connect
if I add portgroups to it.
