Try using "Global Mapper" (www.globalmapper.com), a complete and not expensive software that read/write all kind of GIS data.
You can load DXF and reexport in a format suitable for XSI downsampling the height data.
I you can put on an ftp the file I can try to see what happen.
I've successfully used this SW for loading DEM and Hires Geotiff in XSifor several Italian productions talking about our "beautiful" peninsula and his coasts.

Hi All,
Just picking brains here. We need to get some mapping data into XSI
purchased from Ordnance Survey. The files are essentially height data in
DXF format though there are two other formats, NTF and ArcGrid. Now
we've been trying to convert the DXF sample file using various
converters, but the file is huge, over 180mb of data and nothing really
wants to convert it. What we need is to somehow open the file, reduce
it's size (resolution), and output a poly grid or grid of nulls, to get
into XSI.
Has anyone had experience of this? What I'm wondering is, would it be
possible to get a piece of code that runs through the DXF file and
reduces its size. ie extracts every 3rd point or something. Basically
the files only come in one size, which is our main problem, and we don't
necessarily need the resolution they're supplying.
Any help would be very appreciated! Thanks
