afaik, if you get a uv projection
for a nurbs object,
by default it should give you the
proper uvs, the "built in ones" as you refer to.

what I understand, Nurbs surfaces come with their own set of UVs. I
created a fairly complex nurbs object and xsi's texture editor tools
doesn't seem to much help here since I can't really select any edges or
faces. I guess no one is using nurbs very much?
