Hi Brent,

thanks alot for explaining things a bit. I´t´s likely I wouldn´t
have come across [Ctrl]+[k] anytime soon myself.

Regarding the scaling issues:

I have polygon objects I sucessively edit components on,
up to a point where scaling the object in any other mode
but "local" is becoming unavailable (greyed out in the interface).

To get rid of this I have to freeze modelling, freeze transformations
and usually also have to set a neutral pose, it´s only then I can
again use the other scaling modes like "ref" or "global".

You can imagine this isn´t ideal, especially if there is a hesistation
to freeze modeling but you have to because the local scaling isn´t
aligned to the world axis (sp?).

I wonder if this is a bug or a feature I don´t grasp yet, while failing
to set a preference accordingly.

Cheers

tim

P.S: Over all, I´m feeling very pleased when modeling in XSI 5.11 and get results that exceed what I could have bothered myself to do in Maya. Not because I´m generally lazy but there´s only a fixed amount of effort allowed...

Tim,

I didn't really understand your issues with scaling and neutral poses
so I would need to a more detailed description of the problem.

In the meantime I'll take a whack at some of your other issues...

Pivots in XSI can be used for modeling (doesn't modify the object's pivot)
or for animating.

To have the transform tool pivot change the object's pivot just turn on
Transform -> Modify Object Pivot and the behaviour with freeze transforms
will be very similar to Maya. Otherwise, the pivot is just a tool setting.

You also do not need to use hierarchies of nulls for achieving a different
rotation order. Just hit Ctrl-K to bring up the transform PPG on a selected
object and there is a rotation order setting right there on the first tab.

BTW. The pivot settings can also be accessed from within this PPG.

Cheers!

Hi there,

just having transfered to XSI for modeling a while ago
I still lack the understanding for some transformation
options specific to XSI 5.11:

For what reason does a polygon object sometimes
refuse to be scaled in any other mode but "local"?

I can of course freeze construction history and transforms,
click "Set neutral pose" and then am allowed to use
"world" or "reference" mode but again, why is that?

That´s just as puzzling as the way the object/transform pivots
work. In Maya, I can set the pivot to a specific location,
freeze transforms and start keying SRT´s with zeroed out
transforms while still having the pivot offset.

Obviously, XSI is far more flexible, especially with "COG",
"add" and "ChildCompensation" options available on the fly
but this also means my hierarchies are stuffed with nulls everywhere.

While on the other hand, splitting XYZ rotations up into a chain
of three nulls (under the hood, one for each axis) to avoid flipping
while rotating isn´t implemented as a "mode" althought it would
likely be a nice feature/functionality - especially if not required
to be manually created for each object.

Cheers

tim
