i am not sure if i am of help here ;)
i had some "issues" with that as well.
when assigning materials to ref models and then using these ref models
in another scene, its important that in that other scene the material
library was loaded before importing the ref model. then everything
went smooth.
i had these duplicates as well, but they would vanish when i delete
the ref model. so i didnt bother. *shrug*
i had nothing but trouble with ref material libraries and since then
stay away from them. but maybe i just didntknow how to handle them
properly (likely)
