need to do is have one end 568A the other 568B - a straight through
has the same both ends, but by convention the UK uses 568B.

Just set the IP addresses to something like 192.168.0.X on each and
have a matching subnet 255.255.255.0 is a good default and you should
be able to ping each other and share etc directly over a single
network cable.
