Hooray - one less reason for people to spit at me for using linux.

That was the magic recipe. I can zoom! I can zoom!
Thanks Alan.
Hi Brad,
I'm not sure what you've got happening there, but we've no similar issues here. Just to check it isn't a setting that we put so right-click menus etc work for us I'll give you the settings we set for interaction in the kde control panel.
In the control panel go to desktop->Window Behavior->Advanced->Focus stealing prevention level=none
Then in desktop->Window Behavior->Window Actions->Modified key + * = none
Hope this helps - if not I can always assist with transition to gentoo ;-)
Cheers,
Alan.

Unfortunately, I can't do that due to a completely different XSI linux issue:
The version of linux we have been running is quite annoying with respect to typical XSI workflow regarding key presses and mouse clicks. For example, if I wish to zoom while in the middle of running a command like SplitEdge, I have to press the z key, hold the mouse button down, then release the mouse button and wait a moment before I depress the z key. If I forget to wait a moment before removing my finder from the z key, SplitEdge is canceled and I have to start over.
This annoyance applies to all of our keyboard/mouse-click interactions in KDE over Redhat Fedora Core Release 3.
It's possible to get used to it and work around it somewhat, but after all this time, I still get workflow hiccups a hundred times a day.
I don't think you can configure that.
But you can click a bit further away and then slide in closer before you
release the mouse button.

Subject: SplitEdge Tool, and vertex snapping tolerance?
Does anyone know if it is possible to tune the sensitivity of the auto
snapping functionality when using the SplitEdge tool ('\' key)?
There are many circumstances where I don't want my new edge line
connecting to an existing vertex, but by default, XSI fights me about
this unless I'm zoomed in very close.
