It's all premultiplied. The image is perfectly correct and add
composites it as expected (no issues of interpretation etc). I guess
the issue I'm asking about is what to do about artists that don't like
the correct way to do this. i.e. whether there's another approach
which someone's found to be better received by artists.
Few offlist replies I've got have pretty much said I'm correct and to
"use the ad, Luke".

What might work (dodgy sometimes) is to render premultiplied and run it
through the unmult op in FXtree or AE's unumult plugin (lame, I know...).
But sometimes this helps make the edge consistent at least.
