Thanks guys!
I've managed to convert one of the images using imf_copy, but it looks like auto converting them at render time would be the easiest option.
Will have a play and see how it goes.

Cheers

Hi All,
I'm getting a weird mental ray memory error when rendering a scene I'm working on.
It basically consists of a very large grid - 500x500, with multiple (about 6) high res (some up to 10,000x3000) mapped on. To get it to render I need to logo out then back in again. Could it be that I need to convert all my textures to .map files? They're .pics at the moment. As I've never used .maps before, i don't know if it helps to use them when dealing with memory issues.

Map files would definitely be the place to start. They are easy to make with imf_copy.exe. If you can, use the -p option to do pyramid filtering, and turn on eliptical filtering in XSI. (I have seen this fail sometimes, where, with really big textures, the filtering just makes the texture go to one big blurred mass.)

Could anything else cause this?

Motion blur eats a lot of memory. Perhaps you could blur it in the post with Real Smart Motion Blur, or render it out without blur, and them camera project the rendering back onto your geometry to apply motion blur with the rasterizer.
