If I remember correct the highest color depth flame supports as of late is 12 bit. But they can import and export 16 bit formats I think. There was some article I'd come across a while back about how ILM had done some crazy work to get flame to work with .exr in a 12bit space more or less transparently.

I doubt it's gotten easier since then (on flame anyway).

Meanwhile the rest of the world seems to have welcomed .exr with open arms.
