We render only to floating point, unless it is a mask, in which case we either do 16bit if there is a lot of transparency or motion blur, or 8 bit if it is fairly hard eged.

File format is typically 32 bit OpenEXR, or SGI for masks. Everything gets composited in floating point in Fusion.
