Aside from this, I am also getting the message: "RC   0.3  progr: computing camera volumes" which appears to be taking XSI around 10 minutes to do... it wasn't doing this before.
its common to see this when working with displacement.
I couldnt say for sure, but I think its the last operation before MR starts doing subdividing and displacement.
It can take a long time to get a logged message from displacement itself, so you would be tempted to think: why the hell is mr computing camera volumes - whatever those are - while its actually simply displacing.
especially when mr starts to do displacement presampling this time becomes very long.

just for the sake of it, try rendering without displacement, see if you get the same behaviour?

if you are working with view dependent on, and you switched to a higher resolution for weekend renders, note that the higher resolution will cause higher amounts of subdivision being triggered.

I am using all the tricks in the book in this scene - PointOven, Particles, SSS, Mixer Animation, Displacements, T-Gen, Occlusion, Area Lights, Volume lights - I could go on.... and on.... but like I said, this was all completely fine, manageable, and, dare I say it, fast, until Friday where I really didn't make any dramatic changes at all (I did make a lot of changes, just none that weren't entirely run-of the mill).
did you try deleting the SSS shader and lightmap (I know that doesnt help) - to see if without it everything renders just fine and fast?

Any help greatly appreciated.
