i totally realise, we dont ever render to standard directories here.
i was just wondering if there is some kind of rhyme or reason that could be tokenised.

i also recognise the need for a browsable absolute output path.
just trying to help out.

as you were.

Sam,
I think thats exactly his point. He probably isn't looking to use an XSI-preformatted existing or nonexisting location to save his files. He probably has a unique path he wants to select. Using Render Options and Framebuffers to set the path and name may not easily cut it because it may not easily match his path format. For example say you've rendered some files from another 3d or comp app. You just want to add the new XSI files to that location so you just want to select the existing path. You have to type it in, you can't browse and select it. If you are using XSI templates as your primary path/name formatting, it's no problem, you will be able to design a template between Render Options and Framebuffers, but if it is a location outside your XSI database and is not similar to an XSI convention, there is a lot of modification to both Render Options and Framebuffers which have to be typed in manually, at least within the Framebuffer. Render Options provides for a single location, the master path, but if he has multiple dissimilar locations IE different drive letters or different server names, it doesn't help him much since the master path is useless. He just wants to select each existing relevant path for each relevant pass. Can't do that currently by just browsing for it, you have to type it in.

it's not that simple, dont want my renders in subfolders named after the passes

i want to HAVE THE OPTION to choose EXACTLY which folder each pass goes into, and the only way to do this currently is to type the path
for EACH pass!

Im not entirely sure im understanding,

i would recommend using tokens, they streamline the process
    extremely well.
if you are can include an example of your pass output tokens?

if you are trying to type an absolute path into the pass output,
keep in mid it is added to the scene output (turn on resolved
    path to check)
so for the path options just type in the chunk after the scene
    options.

    ie:
    scene options: c:\temp\
    pass options: [pass]\[pass]_[framebuffer].[frame].exr
    results in: c:\temp\reflection\reflection_main.0001.exr

if tokens make you nauseous this ought to do the same thing
    pass options: reflection\reflection_main.###.exr

the only thing i can imagine you are doing wrong is typing in the
whole pass path into the pass output

but even when the scene points to database A, the passes can

lots of bother, and overwritten renders, which is always fun!

got me stumped, the worst re-design of a dialogue/system
        ever, but i digress!
so i have a scene, let's call it scene A, i set up some
passes and save the scene, and when it renders all is well....
little subfolders containing my shiny new frames
now lets say i take that scene and change a bunch of stuff,
and save it as scene B
when it renders, for some reason it thinks it's still scene
A and overwrites all my previous shiny new renders
                 hmmm, not so good
so i open the PASS render options, and lo and behold, there
is a path there pointing to scene A's location (regardless
of the scene options pointing to scene B)
"i'll just change it" thinks I....
except, there is no 'browse' button (i mean the three dots,
NOT right click and browse which just opens an XSI browser)
NOW, it would appear the only way to change the paths, is
to TYPE THE WHOLE PATH MANUALLY!?!?!? Or copy and paste!?!
                 are you kidding?!
who is responsible for this? i want names, first borns and
        recompense! i demand satisfactions sirs!
6.03 (hint) fix it (it's just a browser with an ok button
on it and a passback of the location)
and i KNOW that xsi will put stuff in folders with the same
name as the pass, what if i don't want this??
