A lot of people, before realising the issue, end up selecting a
whole branch and use 'copy shader branch' as a copy function. After pasting
they get 1 copy of the top level node, 2 copies of the level 2 nodes, 3 copies
of each level 3 node and so on. A copy and copy branch function would solve this
potential hazard.

I agree!!
2007/7/18, Greg Smith <greg(at)stanwinston.com>:
Speaking
of copying nodes in the RT, one thing that although is minor
but has
bugged me in the past, is that copying either via context menu
or hotkey
will copy the shader branch, meaning the node and everything
downstream
from that point. There's been several instances where I just
wanted to
copy the node itself, and either had to disconnect the
downstream before
copying it or, copy it and strip the downstream after
its been pasted.
Granted its really not a painstaking process, but for
me it just seems
weird that there isn't a "copy node" to compliment the
"copy shader
branch". Or better yet, just a copy selected, considering
if your LMB
click on a node it highlights the node itself, however if
you MMB click
the node, it selects the node and everything downstream.
just thought
I give my two cents,
Greg
