Yeah, one of the knocks on 6.0 is its STL support. Many projects end up having to use STLPort to get STL code working. Definitely stay away from it and try out C++ Express.

Depends on what you want to write. I would suggest using MSVC++ Express
2005 as it's freely available and allows you to do most things you would
need to do in 3D.
Another thing to consider is that MSVC++ v6.0 is nearly 10 years old.
Pretty soon it won't be able to compile usable code for today's applications
as developers move on to newer technologies. mental ray is one example as
it requires MSVC++ v7.0 (2003) or later to compile shaders for use with the
renderer. As more applications move towards 64-bit computing, MSVC++ 6.0
will become obsolete.

Subject: Beginning C++ Plugin Development
Hello
I have been writing scripts using Jscript and will be switching to
developing plugins in C++. I am experienced with Visual C++ 6 although
documentation says I should use .NET 2003 (or 2005). Does anyone have any
recommendations as to which program I should be using? (I am using XSI 6.02)
Thank you in advance.
