scaling displaced mesh killing render times

Subject : scaling displaced mesh killing render times
Anyone have any tips for scaling or deformations causing the mesh to scale down to very small values in regards to displacement?  I have an object with parts of it being scaled down to very small values and I think the displacement is having a hard time computing such small values in the tiny crammed mesh.  Anyway to limit the displacement to larger portions of the mesh?
