Yeah I was checking these out as well but couldn't spring for the extra cost at the time.  I just needed more screen space quickly.  Anyone use any of the NEC LED displays at all?  They are pretty expensive and maybe still best for print stuff but damn did it look good last year at Siggraph when I first saw it.

1920x1200 x 2 = 4608000

2560x1600 = 4096000

but thats being anal.

 

even a single 24" is great to work with, XSI behaves very well on it.

 

the dells are ok and they come at a very good price.

A nice sharp, contrasted image, and a minimum of artefacts, trailing,... (need good cables!)

For my home use I wouldnt/didnt hesitate.

 

But mind that color accuracy is not so good.

The whites go all the way around the spectrum without ever really being white.

They also change alot during a day's use - first they need to warm up, in order to get a decent contrast. But after a few hours when they heat too much, it gets real hard to see nuances in the dark zones.

A real pain in lighting: the renders in the morning dont look the way they did when you launched them in the evening.

I've noticed this on at least a dozen of them so its not an isolated issue.

They're not bad monitors at all, certainly compared to the competition, but they do have their limitations.

 

If you wanna go for something more reliable, check the NEC Spectraview 2690.

More expensive than the 30 inch even, but you get what you pay for: 26 inches of color calibrated goodness.

For studio-wide, reliable viewing they are a treat.

After these, you dont want to go back.

as for better for having side-by-side apps..   I guess it's preference.  I prefer to toggle apps, and have mucho space.  But there is no problem putting them side by side on the 30..   It's subjective I guess.

It's a joy.  The wide aspect ratio, is awesome.  It's just widescreen.. it acts no differently than 2 monitors only you don't have your divider in the middle.
So I actually run XSI a dual monitor layout...  or, some times I'll run it on single monitor layout, and move it to one side, while I have email and photoshop open on the other side of the montitor.   I won't go back to 2 monitors.. I'm in love with this 30".

those folks with the 24's... ( Kris! ) are just trying to make themselves feel better because they didn't get the 30"!  ;-)

I personally love the Dell 24 inch.  I was going to purchase one 30 inch but for the same price, you get two 24s.  The 30 inch has a higher resolution but will consume both your DVI outs (if you even have that) and I don't think the extra resolution is necessary.  The 24s at 1920 x 1200 seem to be a great balance of screen size and resolution and you can't beat it for the price.  Picture quality is fantastic and monitor is well built and sturdy.
