I'm pretty sure that has nothing to do with scene complexity.
On this project... http://www.genecrucean.com/vids/pdfa_shrinking.html I had those black spots quite a bit on the football. Geometry wise this was a very simple scene. What was causing it in this situation was some funky geometry on the football laces. Our black spots were localized to the laces so maybe that will help you find the problem a little faster in a heavy scene.

Somehow I got rid of the problem. What precisely solved it, I don't know. But now I have new one:

This is a huge scene, the FG parameters are really high. If I lower
them, the whole things becomes spotty and uneven. But now I get these strange artifacts, in the squares in either black or in yellow. Anybody got a solution?
