Answering my own question.
In short: It does work.
Long:
When running XP64 and XP32 with the SP2 Firewall, make sure you explicitely open the ports XSI/mental ray will require for master slave communication. While you do so, make sure that file/printersharing is enabled, too.
To minimize security hassle, you may want to "change scope" to "My network (subnet) only" for the below and any XSI, or "file and printer sharing" entries.
That would be the two/three ports listed in your services file after installation of XSI. As an example for XSI 6.02:
mi-spm [portnumber] /tcp # mi-raysat3_5_7_23 [portnumber] /tcp # mi-ray3_5_7_23 [portnumber]/tcp #
You´ll easily find the services file using "search" in your windows directory. Open with notepad. Open those ports in your firewall...
Now, the softimage wiki and help may suggest to telnet each slave to test functionality, which is o.k. for people that do have telnet/Remote Desktop/whatever enabled by default/mistake.
Here´s a hands on approach that won´t require telnet:
Do a custom/full install of XSI on each slave, including licensing setup. Pick the local machine as licensing server (since the server used later may not be installed yet...).
Once you´re done, find "localhost" in your setenv.bat file, add your server XSI>UserTools>setenv.bat, to something like:
set _SPM_HOST=localhost;myspmserver
Where "myspmserver" is the machinename or an IP like 192.168.0.2) This´ll let you run XSI via a "localhost" dongle or via "myspmserver".
You do that on all your slaves, then simply fire up the "License Manager" and query your "myspmserver". Obviously, the "myspmserver" should have a license running... If you get a response from the query, communication with mi-spm is working. Now, to give it a final check, try to start XSI on you slave (one at a time), if that works, satelitte rendering will do so, too.
Last step, add the slaves to your ray3hosts file, where mi-raysat3_5_7_23 [portnumber] /tcp # gives you the port for satelitte rendering and mi-ray3_5_7_23 [portnumber]/tcp # for batch rendering/distributed rendering
Samplefile:
MySlave:7007 MyHouse:7007 MySlave:7008 MyHouse:7008
Start XSI on your Master, enable Progress messages for you renderregion, load something complex and enjoy the scripteditor spitting lines with your slaves in it.
Cheers
tim
P.S: Some of the above should be in the help, it cost me yet another day to get things going on a lousy three machine setup, mostly because I didn´t get the firewall to behave or tell me anything...

Hi guys,
did anyone of you successfully start a renderregion in a 32bit XSI 6.01 session on a XP64 machine with a XP32/XSI6.01 sattelite contributing?
E.g., master is 64bit but runs 32bitXSI, slave is 32bitXP running 32bit XSI6.01.
Can´t get it to work, any pointers?
Cheers
tim
