I think I might RND this and other options over a week or so to see what wll work out best.
It's never fun learning a new app just before a big job....
cheers!!

I just started using it here. First thing to do is update your graphic drivers to the latest one.
I also hope you have an nVidia card. J Otherwise it's dang slow.
There's a very new plug-in for Vue to XSI. You basically start Vue from an XSI toolbar and it's supposed to work flawless.
I get crashes all the time but I have to check it out more with their support.
If you have to make forest, jungle or similar(whenever you'll want to use plants, trees, flowers), you'll probably have to either build them on your own with their SolidGrowth technology which is ok, or buy some on their sister site http://www.cornucopia3d.com/ or use what you have modeled in XSI. They have very limited ones that come with the software.
I find that for VERY realistic landscapes nothing beats Terragen 2 yet. It's just incredible when put in the right hands. J

But not sure about the support between XSI and Terragen. Altought I know that Mister Schoenberger wrote a script to transfer XSI camera and sunlight to Terragen(version 1 I believe)

Also, with Terragen2, while it is still in development, you buy it for a lower price and get frequent updates. It's only 399$ for the full package. There's a trial on their website.

I think Xstteam is a bit slicker than the old Vue 5. I used it a while back on a largish project. It's powerful but quirky. Allow twice as much time as you'd think, take some time out before you start to figure out some of its oddities – its keying mechanism is insane – and check stuff really carefully, it has a way of changing things without telling you. I'd still say it's about the best out there right now though if you need to do landscapes.

as far as i remember the last time doing it...
only camera could be passed automatically... and it was done quite well
geometry needs to be passed trough obj or maybe theres another way but at the time i did it that way
i rendered myh landscape on vue... and rendered some elements on xsi using the same camera on both
and it worked quite well.
maybe now theres another approachOn 8/8/07, Ajit Menon <xsiajit(at)gmail.com> wrote:
Here's a slight off-topic question.
I'm playing with the idea of using Vue 6 xtream for an upcoming project; so I would love to know how successfully it's been used in an XSI pipeline. I haven't looked into it yet, so apologies if any question is very straightforward.
I think the version I may use doesn't support XSI yet, so I may have to route it via Maya. In which case:
1. How does camera import/ export work.
2. Is the multi-pass rendering within it pretty good, or is it a good idea to do a base render from Vue, then export the geometry to XSI via Maya?
3. Other issues/ succes stories would be good to hear. The job's going to be HD, but might be a more terrain-based than lush vegetation sort of scene.
cheers and thanks a bunch!
