Hello!
New subscriber, long time user ;)!
For place holders, I usually use a checkerboard texture, straight out
of XSi. I rename it in the same way that Tim says, as a reference to
eventually plug in your custom texture map. This way, you can quickly
test out your materials in rendes, withought the funky NoIcon
colors!
Personal preference.

Absolutely. Look for material libraries in the Explorer (switch to the
Materials scope).
You can export libraries as dotXSI.

Hi Bernard,
yeah, noIcon is a good idea (plus naming the nodes
to give an idea, like "plug base texture here") but
I meant something else.
Using the dreaded phrase "in Maya or Max I could"
simply create a shader and save it out as either a
Maya *.ma/*.mb file (as if saving a *.scn) or in Max
I could create a materiallibrary file to load into the
materialeditor/slot - I don´t know if something
similar exists for XSI, e.g. saving out all your
materials (as listed in a explorer) and importing
that into another scene?
Cheers

Well you could either include the actual texture in your centralized
library, or you could plug a noIcon in-place.

Hi guys,
there´s options to save material/shader settings
as presets but how do you guys usually organize
your materials for re-use in other projects?
I have several shading networks I´d like to add
to a (hopefully growing) database of materials
but am not sure what´s best to minimize dependecies
(like textures, ambient/light rig settings) while making
sure the material still gives something to work with
on import into a fresh scene?
