to add to Bernards reply, Material Libraries can be exported, reimported to other scenes or referenced for that matter..
The materials themselves can also be exported separately from the libraries. At the top right corner of every ppg in xsi is a save preset option.. In the rendertree you can save the material node as a preset, which will also save the entire tree plugged into it. If you are using the render region it sets the region contents as a thumbnail.
