Yeah, that’s the way it’s looking right now. But the UV creation would need to be an operator, not a command since the extrusion op (again, not a command J ) will vary the number of faces generated if the shape of the rail curve changes.

even if it would be a two step process - one command creating the extrusion and a second generating UV's - it would still beat the crap out of extrusion as it is.

just my 2p.

Thanks.

I’d really like to get on the fly UVs generated on this though. Anyone have any suggestions?

On the left, simple example of a composite extrude of two profile curves – circle and square – along a rail curve with scaling and rotation of the extrusion along the curve. Compared to xsi curve extrude to the right.

Note the following

·         Even step sizes along the rail and profile curve. But, segments always hit the knots. That is, sharp corners on the curve still get you sharp corners on the resulting mesh

·         No flipping at inflection points

·         Correct mitring at corners (see red outline on right example; you don't get this).

·         You can add, remove and re-order shape curves on the fly.

In general I'm getting much better meshes than I can get from the built in extrude tool.
