I soppose it depends on what type of animation you want the animators to be saving off in the mixer. We tend to set up characters with either Marking Sets or Character sets, and ask the animators here to save only F-Curve data off (just like Chris mentions).  This minimises the problems associated with saving expressions/constraints as sources and reapplying them back onto the rig.

I've found reapplying actions that were saved as Animated Parameters - Fcurves & Expressions destroys all linked with expressions. Is there a chance they're store clips with that instead of Animated Paramateres - Fcurves?
