Mental ray standalone rendering of XSI scenes is a right royal pain in the
arse simply because you do need a license in order to generate the mi file
in the first place. Which means for each node in the farm you need both a
mental ray license and an XSI license. Or you have to jump through hoops
finding a way to batch up the generation of the mi files.

Some time ago I remember talking with Dave Lajoie about opening up free mi
generation on the command line as a way of easing this bottleneck and he was
quite positive about it. Then he left softimage and it all sort of went
quiet. But I still think it needs looking at, especially now with the way
Maya and Max users seem to be drowing in mental ray licenses.
