That sounds exactly what out farm does with Maya. Are you also Rush uses? :)
We have a python backend which runs a maya-wrapper that exports the
file and then render it. And we let Rush do the math of how the jobs
are divided up between machines.
We are thinking of creating MI servers though which only do MI
exports, but that is only in the "idea" phase right now. And it might
stay there too since what we do now works pretty good.
