if you apply a weight map, apply a push op, connect the amplitude to the weight map and set the value to 1
open the brush properties and turn on INTERACTIVE under the refresh section

paint away!

bit slow on 100,000k poly meshes, but it does kind of work if you want to stay native

Not from what I've seen Kim.  If you paint a weight map you don't really know what's going to happen until you use a push deformer, but with Artisan and it's happening in real time as though you were sculpting a real blob of clay.  Not as slick as Mudbox or Zbrush but at least with Artisan its in the main 3D app, with no export or import required.

Isn't painting the weight map on a push deformer interactive?

I'm just trying to create some low poly rocks as in game modeling. I
decided to try and paint on a subdivided cube and see if I can work it
into a nice stone/rock shape. As far as I can tell the only way to do
it is to add a paint weights operator to the geo and then do a push and
relax deformer to it. Is there no way in XSI to paint the weights
interactively as in Maya's Artisan?

Cheers,
Karl.
