no its not just you.
mental ray has its ways of drawing alpha that can be problematic at times
 
sometimes you can get around it in the render options, by switching to RAW and/or unchecking premultiply.
As I've never even considered using XSI's glow I couldnt comment if it will solve this case.
 
anyways,
if you're not compositing, why bother about the alpha?

Is it me or is the alpha channel screwed when using the standard glow. I can't get any control over the alpha whatsoever....
 
I didn't really want to have to composite stuff.
