I came across a few other shaders that didnt connect to a node that uses the shadow and or photon inputs
(not sure which shaders, and if they are native or 3rd party), but usually if inputs are greyed out, I try to disconnect
those from the material node.

Thanks Oz, I tried it and it works!! I must say it was considerate of Softimage not to include that crucial piece of advice in the help file.

dielectric doesnt like the shadow and photon ports :)

connect your phong, only to the surface input of the material, then you'll be able to connect the dielectric to the phong node.

I'm trying to use the dielectric shader node on a phong materials transparency, but I can't get it to attach. In the help file for the dielectric it states: "Used to control the Transparency parameter of a surface shader, usually Phong, to create realistic glass or water." Only when I try to plug it in to the phong, all the ports are greyed out. How do I use this shader?? Can anyone shed some light?

Karl.
