I haven't gone down that path but for a 'get it done in 1 minute' way you could just build the cube units in place and freeze all their transforms at 0,0,0.   Then you just maunally select the nine units per side and rotate on one axis at a time. 

It all depends on how many shots you need it for.

Hi,

I need to rig a working rubik's cube.
From what I saw, on each side of the cube, the centered smaller cube is
static,
but all the rest are rotating around all 3 axes.
I guess this could be achieved by using a number of parents, and turning
on/off pose constraints.

I was wondering, maybe someone already had to deal with a 3D rubik's
cube, and could share some tips and tricks,
and\or a better approach.
