Zpic it stores the values in softimage
units, so normally it's in at compositing
stage that you would pick the range of
interest.
For the 8-bit display in the browser,
thumbnails and flipbook, a special
formula is used to show something
interesting.
For its own purpose, when loaded in the fxtree, all the
Zpic values are
divided by -100000 to remap everything between
0.0 and 1.0.
Using the pixel parser you could re-multiply
the values to get back into
a range that you like.

What's written to disk....I'd
like to be able to have some control over the Depth render channel if
possible. Largely because rendering a channel avoids the extra time of a
pass.

Are you talking for for display only or do you want to
modify what gets written out to disk?
