20k triangles and 25k render hairs, you might have almost more guide hairs 
than render hairs?
if you tag select all points on the hair object (go to tag mode and then 
ctrl-A ) you can see in the bottom command line how much points there are, 
divide by 14 for the amount of strands.

a few hundred is fine, a few thousand would be fairly complex, ten thousand 
would be asking for trouble I guess.

hello alli hope someone could help me.i am working on a job using 6.02 in 
which i have a "word" modeled (20,356 triangles-simple model), it  has hair 
total hairs 25000 not much hair . and the word has a simple multi-tiered rig 
with rotation and deformations to make it jump around. the word as been 
extracted into 3 parts ( 2 letters each-each with hair) weighed with 
deformation for secondary animation.now for some reason the process in the 
windows task manager states that xsi is using more then 1.3 gigs of mem 
usage, just to have the file open. no interaction at all. just having it sit 
there. when i try to render to jumps to 1.5 gigs and crashes stating that 
mental ray has a problem and will no longer work and that i must restart xsi 
for mental ray to work again. i put everything in passes, but still has a 
hard time. i have also exported the rig and model to a fresh scene, merging 
scenes, freezing everything i could. still no go. any help would be greatly 
appreciated thankshe!
re is some information that might be useful.dual quad core mac pro, running 
boot camp XP pro. 2 gigs ramxsi6.02freelancers installing crap like bear 
share.
