xsi licenses backward compatible or not?

Subject : xsi licenses backward compatible or not?

are XSI licenses backwards compatible - as in: can you launch v4 or v5 with a v6 license?

In my experience they allways have been (except on the switch from flexlm to spm) but I have a sysadmin claiming otherwise for this installation.
