I had a similar issue with hair on a recent project.
You should be able to render your shot by using the memory optimization options in XSI. Bringing tile size down to 16x16 or 32x32 should help and the default for mesh splitting is 0.125 in the optimized mode.
This might be a tad slower but it worked fine with a scene with about 200,000 hairy bits...

In the past, merging an old scene into a new one helped bring down 'artificial' scene size... just make sure you clean-up all the passes and default lights though.

thanks all i will give the artical a read, to learn more about it. i know very little about the BSP.

though it still deosn't explain why the file size is is 200mg and that it take so much memory to just have the file open. not doing anything to it.

cheers

And if you want to know more about BSP optimization, check out Bernard's "BSP for artists" page. It's a must read for anyone looking to learn about BSP.

This is probably about render optimisation. Two places to look; BSP for the renderer and BSP for the hair. The most likely to be causing the problem is the hair BSP.

Basic BSP optimisation technique; turn on rendering verbosity, open up a region and check the wallclock for time. Now move a BSP slider. If render time goes down you're going the right way with the slider, continue until the time goes up. Repeat for the other slider.

hey tim

no offense taken its a legit question.
when i say 1.3 mem usage. i didn't mean RAM. (i have about 2 gigs ram)
ctrl+alt+delt then the task manager pops open and under the processes tab. xsi its take up 1.3 mem usage with no interactivity with the software.
everything in the scene is default. no skylight nor architectural materials where used. just a texture map for the hair and the text model. and yess it is a for look development. when i create passes it seems to render ok. some times it has unpredictable crashes.

could it be a bug in 6.02??

there isn't a win box here for me to test it on. only macs with bootcamp installed. funs fine if i don't deal with hair.
