That isn't exactly true. Accessing a property's parameters in the ScOp is perfectly legal as long as the property itself is plugged into an input port of said ScOp. Modifying a property's parameter that way is also valid as long as the property is plugged into an input port and an output port. It's the only way to have ScOps modify text fields for example.
My understanding is that you work on a copy of the property, modify its parameters and then redump it over itself.
