I would say: keep this one as is, for "generalist"
applications,
but also make a couple of short versions
tailored to specialist work (simulation/fx , animation, lighting/shading) and
avoid any logo/packshot work in those.
Put them all on one DVD, with a very clear
menu, where one can easily select the relevant reel.
When the reviewer likes the one he was interested
in, he'll naturally go and look at the other reels, but the
all-important-first-impression would have been made - so lengthiness should not
damage any more. On a second review the full reel should actually strengthen
your case: "look, the fx reel was good, and the full reel shows he can do plenty
of other stuff too." Thats a very solid basis me thinks.
