He needs to convert it to an FLV using the On2 codec for best results as this codec supports alpha (unlike the Soreson alternative).

 

Simplest way is for him to import the QuickTime into Flash Video Encoder that comes with Flash. Otherwise, you could supply him with a FLV by exporting from After Effects. Problem with the latter solution is that you will need to determine the bitrate based on the target user’s bandwidth, and maybe he wants multiple formats for different bandwidth and so on…

apparently there is Flash 8 video, which fully supports alpha channels.

because flash isn't a bitmap and/or video software in the first place!!! I would provide him a tga format. then there are no surprises...
