Hi Alistair,

If memory serves, in these cases there is normally more room on the
right side of the tree... If that is the case in your situation you
can right-click on the material node and drag the whole tree across to
the right.

Otherwise, have you tried Ctrl-R?  It doesn't always leave things as
you'd like, but it generally pretty good.
