It would depend on the applications and whether they're OLE compliant.
Applications like Photoshop can be started from scripts in, say, XSI but XSI
can't be started from other apps in the same way. It's a long time since
I've looked at it but I think, if XSI is running then it can be scripted
from OLE compliant applications. If that's the case then you can drive it
from Perl.
