Overriding sprite "input" always renders white alpha

Subject : Overriding sprite "input" always renders white alpha
I have a bunch of objects, whose material consist of a sprite shader
connected into the surface input of the material.

In a partition, I want to override the input parameter of the sprite shader.

So I put an override on the input parameter of the sprite shader, so
far so good. But no matter what I connect in the override, the alpha
is *always* rendered white. Any idea?

Using XSI 5.11.
