Yes that's a great replacement of obj but with the huge advantage of custom data preservation and open source.
I forgot to mention that this also preserves basic shading and texture path.

It provide sib/sia file format native support
Displacement data, edge creasing, object and component groups
(clusters), uv preservation
It is distributed with a plugin for maya, a plugin for xsi and a python
wrapper.
You can access the files as a zip archive or throuth svn (recommended to
update the code) here
