Just to add some comments after the holidays.....
Layers doesn't work either, as all the objects would get the same color.
What I was trying to do was a create a measuring tool, with colored nulls, line and text, and only the nulls selectable. But the colors would show for the line and text, even when the "selectability" was turned off for these objects.
As this is currently not possible, an "all selectable" version have to do for testing.

What about layers? You can set the layer color and turn off selection/render/view...

In the preferences, there's a setting for changing the look of unselected objects as a whole, but I don't think that's what you were looking for.
As far as I know, there's no way around the dark grey on unselectable objects. You could make similar-shaped controls out of geometry and apply a material to it. If you make it very thin, you can probably get away with it. (Just don't forget to make it completely non-renderable.)
An override on coloring for unselectable objects would be nice to have in XSI 7.0. (Listening, Softimage??) A customizable thickness on curves would rock, too!
