mental ray will load in the texture, uncompressed at the original bit depth. The only exception is half-float EXRs, which are expanded into full-float internally.

Isn't that the same as if you use OpenEXR Wavelet?
As long as it is a texture loader, MRay still keeps the uncompressed image in memory...
There would only be a difference if you use a custom shader instead of the default texturing node.

One question I never tested: Someone knows if Mray will load the texture as float into memory, no matter if you use an 8bit texture?
