Yes Houdini wire solver is slower than XSI hair dynamics but... controls are way better.
For example you can group some very long guides and reduce the number of points before running their simulation. It is easy to blend between the wire solver
result and an other animation with a wireblend operator ( no scripting skills are needed ).
XSI hair dynamics is a closed system. It definitively needs an update ( and the hair combing tools too... ) !
