I am actually thinking of doing this as well.
Thus people can compile the plugins for their specific versions.
In the end this is the way to go, since I am not able to provide plugins for all platforms and versions.
The pc2 format is open, compact and what is more it is fast to read and write.

So what about setting up an open source project for point caching?
Everybody could participate, share knowledge and code so that we can build one open standard point cache tool and not end up having multiple incompatible ones again.
