Hey Bernard...I couldn't find any way to read MDD in Maya, except when using Point Oven..
I believe the built in Point Cache reader, only read MC (maya cache) files. I had to spend the 100 bones on Point oven to get the MDD reader, which worked like a charm.. I had a couple of issues with scale and placement of assets when using the reader, but nothing a scale and relocate couldn't fix.
Note: I didn't try the reader with a dearth of points.. the character I used was about 20000 polys.
for that number of verts, it was very fast, no lag whatsoever..
