I don't know much about custom renderers but I suppose the custom renderer options are  like a Self-Installing PPG, if it's compiled with the translation plugin or whatever it is, you can't do anything without the plugin.

One solution may be to make your own ppg with the same parameters as your render engine and a pre-rendering script that copy the value from the ppg to the render option( if  the render engine allow pre-rendering script!?)
