I too fell bugged by the gamma problem.
If it makes any of you feel better, it's QuickTime player for Windows
that is bugged, not your file.
By this I mean that you can open your H264 mov in VLC and it will
interpret gamma correctly and you'll see it just like you'd expected.
(I tried a year ago and it seemed to work fine.)
So the problem is at playback and your files are actually correct. QT
washes it out in their Windows player because of a misinterpretation
of the gamma and it incorrectly tries to compensate by cranking the
brightness.
