If "Use Coarse Display By Default for Interaction/Playback" is set in the prefs, then any new scene will default to "coarse" as the setting in the display options for interaction/playback. By default, and by that I mean a default/vanilla/plain yoghurt installation of XSI, this preference is off. If this setting has been overridden by prefs in a workgroup, then that might explain why new machines would've have had this set by default.

I couldn't check for sure right now, my settings are migrated at every install but I do know every time I've joined a team where a new computer is set up I have to change it back to full. Case in point, last year doing previz on Golden Compass, all the guys there started with new machines, all of them had this problem when they tracked or zoomed until I figured out how to fix it.
