well for me thats an easy answer, I'm left handed. and the maya qwerty interaction model seems to be catered less to us sinister types. I actually find xsi's key mapping friendlier for lefties. So the O and P keys for myself do get an equal share of use as the S key, in fact I think I might use it even more because I take advantage that you can constrain your camera's orbit axis with O which can be especially useful at times.
There are things though that I do like about maya's layout that makes more sense, and there are things that I do not like about xsi's mapping, e.g. having the duplicate object key "D" right next to your "S" key, very annoying. But overall, I feel that the interaction in xsi is more streamlined, not so much just in the key mapping, but layout and gui interaction. I feel like I am doing less clicks to get at what I want and placement of stuff just seems very intuitive. I am on a job now that requires me to use maya which after a 3 year abscense from using the application for production work, using it again feels like I have hit a brick wall. Everything feels to be out of place as far as where to access parts of the software, and overall the whole application feels... antiquated.
To me it just mystifies me why Soft doesn't hold more of a percentage of the market share than it already does. Not to say that the software is infallible, just that I feel more productive and organized with Soft than I do with Maya.
but thats just me, a sinister redheaded step child speaking.

| Can I ask why you old school Soft users think the native interaction model is better than every other piece of software out there that all relatively mimics the same qwerty setup? I'm looking for solid reasons why it's better. Is it faster because you guys are so hardcore that you don't even use a mouse... therefore freeing up your right hand for O,P usage? ;) I'm calling you guys out. XSI dragging along the old Soft mindset just further alienates potential users from hopping on board. IMO, SI would be better off in the long run if in V7 they just dropped it and kept the qwerty setup as default. Maybe drop it completely from the software but offer the keymap as a download from the site... at least until the "old dogs" retire. $0.02 ching ching On Fri, Feb 1, 2008 at 9:42 AM, Julien Stiegler <julien.stiegler(at)free.fr> wrote: Hey eric, |
